Traditional cold-chain shipping heavily relies on refrigerants and non-recyclable coolers. To reduce the environmental impact of our distribution, we are seeking alternatives for both our new and current products. In 2023, we initiated a strategy to facilitate ambient (room temperature) shipping for new product development. This will enable smaller packaging, thereby reducing the emissions associated with distribution and storage. Every new product is rigorously tested to guarantee its performance and quality meet our high standards.
Our Ship Sustainability Initiative is reassessing our existing cold chain products to increase the number that can be shipped at ambient temperatures. This effort conserves over 12 tons of dry ice annually, prevented 32 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and eliminated use of more than 3,000 Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) coolers each year.
Net Zero Emissions from our Helix On-Site Stocking System
Helix, our on-site inventory management system, reduces emissions through consolidated restocking shipments. Promega also purchases carbon credits to offset all greenhouse gas emissions from the Helix program with 600 tons offset in 2023 supporting the following reforestation efforts:
- BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative – British Columbia, Canada
- Gola Rainforest REDD+, Sierra Leone
Since 2010, the Helix program has offset over 8,500 tons of carbon dioxide. To see more information and learn how to participate, please visit www.promega.com/helix.
