A Broad Range of Cell and Gene Therapy Applications

In gene therapy, Maxwell® instruments are used to assess biodistribution assays, particularly in R&D stages. These assays are conducted using adeno-associated virus (AAV) and lentivirus vectors, which are key tools in gene therapy. Maxwell® instruments help in tracking the distribution of these vectors in various sample types, including brain tissue, mouse blood, mouse liver, cells, and other organs such as the spleen and lungs. This tracking is essential for understanding how gene therapy vectors disperse throughout the body, which is critical for both safety and efficacy assessments.

Moreover, Maxwell® instruments are employed in viral genome titer assays, in manufacturing and QC batch release processes. For example, they can ensure the quality and consistency of lentiviral vectors used in therapy as part of the manufacturing process.

In both gene and cell therapy research, Maxwell® instruments support mRNA expression and transgene copy number assays. These assays are important for understanding how genes are expressed in various cells, tissues, and blood samples, and for determining the number of copies of a transgene present, respectively. This information is crucial in the development of effective gene and cell therapies.

Overall, Maxwell® instruments are a proven, indispensable tool in gene and cell therapy research, offering a wide range of applications from the R&D phase to clinical trials. Their versatility in handling different types of samples and vectors makes them valuable assets in advancing the field of therapeutic gene and cell manipulation.

Benchtop Automated Nucleic Acid Purification at The Francis Crick Institute

Research at The Francis Crick Institute is helping to understand why disease develops and to find new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat a range of illnesses—such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections and neurodegenerative diseases.

In this short video, Dr. Jayamalini Holding-Pillai and Dr. Yan Tsou (Cell Services) at The Francis Crick Institute describe their work and how the Maxwell® RSC instrument is used for automating nucleic acid purification when authenticating cell lines. Along with quality control screening, Cell Services also provides a central repository of cell lines and antibodies at The Francis Crick Institute.

Streamlined Workflows for Any Sample Type

Maxwell® Kits contain all the necessary reagents for DNA, RNA or TNA extraction from different sample types. For DNA extraction, there is a universal kit to allow processing from multiple sample types in a single extraction run or a selection of sample type-specific kits to optimize yield and purity. For RNA, dedicated kits for tissue, cell or blood ensure the purification of high-quality RNA in less than an hour, with minimal hands-on time and without the use of organic solvents. Maxwell® Kits allow different sample input amounts, and the purified DNA, RNA or TNA can be eluted in 50–200µl of elution buffer.
