Overview
High amounts of bioload in cooling water can lead to infrastructure risks, such as blockages due to biofilm growth and sloughing, microbial-influenced corrosion (MIC), and reduced heat transfer efficiency. There are also potential risks to consumers and nearby residents from legionella contamination in the outfall of the cooling tower aerosol. In order to reduce these risks, power plants often use biocides to treat cooling water. But how do they know if the treatment is effective?
