8-Dye STR Kits for Forensic Analysis
Get More Information from Compromised DNA Samples
Clarify your forensic analyses with advanced eight-dye STR multiplex technology. By including additional dye channels relative to previous 4-, 5- or 6-dye kits, 8-dye PowerPlex® STR multiplex kits can give you improved and more informative analyses for even your most challenging DNA samples.
The Power of Eight Colors
Until recently, forensic analyses using STR analysis relied on 4-, 5- or 6-dye systems. That changed when we introduced the first 8-dye STR chemistry and 8-dye compatible Spectrum and Spectrum Compact CE instruments, an advance that means more loci can be included in a single kit. The results are STR multiplex kits with superior sensitivity, consistency, and discriminatory power.
See the developmental validation study for the 8-dye PowerPlex® 35GY System, published in Forensic Genomics.
Avoid Dropout with “Mini-STRs”
UV radiation, heat and weather can severely degrade DNA collected from crime scenes, mass disasters and missing persons cases. When amplifying these samples, larger loci can drop-out, making it difficult or impossible to obtain complete STR profiles.
Many of the loci in our 8-dye STR multiplexes are less than 250bp long. These “mini-STRs” are less prone to dropping out, resulting in better and more complete profiles from even the most degraded DNA samples.
Efficiently Troubleshoot Amplifications
All our 8-dye STR systems include two Quality Indicators, QIS and QIL. These amplification products let you determine at-a-glance if an amplification was successful or why an unsuccessful amplification failed. You can use this information to troubleshoot unsuccessful amplification reactions and maximize your chances of obtaining a complete profile.
Quality indicators for the PowerPlex® 35GY System. Balanced QIS and QIL peaks indicate a successful STR profile (Panel A). An STR profile with balanced QIS and QIL peaks but no STR peaks indicates that no template DNA was amplified (Panel B). A sloping STR profile with balanced QIS and QIL peaks signals degraded sample (Panel C). A sloping STR profile with a low or missing QIL peak suggests the sample is inhibited (Panel D).
Comprehensive Support for All 8-Dye STR Workflows
As the exclusive providers of eight-dye STR kits and 8-dye compatible CE instruments, we can support every step of your 8-dye STR analysis workflows.
Plus, when you partner with our Validation Services team, you get a group of former practitioners dedicated to easing your lab’s transition to 8-dye and other technologies and establishing validated workflows.
Find the kit that best meets your need and compare to related 5- or 6-dye kits. Our growing family of eight-dye STR multiplex kits is tailored to meet regional requirements and databases.

Precision in Forensic DNA Analysis
Forensic analysis demands accuracy, especially when dealing with challenging samples. At the Institute of Legal Medicine in Cologne, experts emphasize the importance of selecting the right kit for the job. Whether analyzing kinship samples or identifying deceased individuals, the choice of technology can make all the difference. With the use of Spectrum CE and PowerPlex® 18E Systems, these advanced solutions excel in processing degraded samples, ensuring that every analysis is done right the first time.
